The Church of St Bartholomew sits proudly overlooking the Village and the beautiful Vale in which it is nestled. It watches over the River Aln at its ' Twyforde' confluence where it is thought that the Synod assembly naming Cuthbert as Bishop of Lindisfarne was held in 684AD.
A snapshot in the life of St Bartholomew's today would show an open, welcoming church, with regular services held fortnightly; the Servery open every Thursday for refreshments and chat, 'Toddly Play' worship sessions for early years children and their parents; lively school services where not a seat is spare; and quiet communions with peace to pray and rest a while. There are weddings and baptisms in this historic church, and our peaceful graveyard offers a final resting place to those that call the Vale their home. Our dedicated children's space ensures a warm welcome for people of all ages. The local Scouts use the extensive grounds of the church for their activities and the grounds also offer valuable wildlife habitat to fauna and flora that write their own story for us to uncover.
We are a Church of England parish church and we welcome all who wish to visit or worship with us. We have three churches, St Bartholomew, St John the Baptist, Edlingham and Bolton Chapel. All three are beautiful stone buildings, all Grade 1 listed and of historical note. Please do visit them.
Worship is at the heart of our life as the people of God in Whittingham. At the centre of all that we do and are, is the Eucharist which is celebrated on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month at 9.30am, also at 8.30am on the 2nd Sunday. Refreshments are serviced after the 9.30am celebration.
The parish of Whittingham & Edlingham w Bolton Chapel is committed to the safeguarding of children, young people and adults. We follow the House of Bishops guidance and policies and have our own Parish Safeguarding Officer(s), PSOs. The Diocese of Newcastle's safeguarding pages contain vital links and information including contacts for the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisor (DSA) who advise our PSOs. If you are concerned that a child or adult has been harmed or may be at risk of harm please contact the DSA. If you have immediate concerns about the safety of someone, please contact the police and your local authority Children or Adults Services.
